Converting Miles to Kilometers using Fibonacci

The Fibonacci Sequence is a sequence of numbers that follow this rule:

"add the 2 previous terms to find the next term"

So if we start at 1. The next number has to be 1, (we have to add 1 and nothing)

1, 1

The next number is (1 + 1) = 2

1, 1, 2

Continue this and we visualise the Fibonacci Sequence of numbers

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55.....

 

When we think of miles into kilometres, most people know that a mile is longer than a kilometre. The Fibonacci sequence helps us find the approximate conversion, if you know the numbers in the sequence.

Simply move from 1 number backward by 1 to find the conversion of km to miles. Take 5 km which is a number in the sequence. Move backward in the sequence by 1 step, to 3. This is the number of miles. Hence, 5 km is 3 miles (approximately).

Similarly,

8 km = 5 miles

21km = 13 miles

34 km = 21 miles

 

The only caveat is that it doesn't work for the first few terms. 

 

Summing works too

what if we need to work out 18km....simply find 2 numbers that add to 18, such as 5 and 13. Convert these to miles and add:

5 km = 3 miles

13 km = 8 miles

Therefore 18 km = 11 miles

 

Or reversing

Changing 26 miles into km:

26 miles = 21 + 5

21 miles = 34 km

5 miles = 8 km

Therefore 26 miles = 34 + 8 = 42 km (this is actually the distance of a marathon!)
